Sotheby's, the world's oldest fine art auction house, was founded in London in 1744 in New Bond Street. It was originally founded by Samuel Baker to sell books, and in its early years offered some of the largest libraries of the world's most eminent personalities, including
Napoleon Bonaparte.

This house was to be at the origin of a long tradition of alliances between collectors and international works of art, marketing the world's most precious goods - a tradition which, two centuries later, is rich in unrivalled authentic knowledge.
